You can submit an online application for the NSFAS bursary in 2023 if you are a South African citizen planning to attend school in 2023 or are presently enrolled in a TVET programme at a public tvet College or University
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) online application period for the academic year 2023–2024 begins on September 1 and ends on November 30, 2022. Visit www.nsfas.org.za if you wish to apply for NSFAS online in 2023.
Financial Aid
The NSFAS Act enables any student to apply for a bursary from NSFAS but allows the board to impose conditions, generally, or in respect of a particular loan or bursary. Such conditions include the use of the means test and the loan conversion of up to 40 per cent of any loan as an incentive for academic success.
It provides for payment by NSFAS of the amount of the loan or bursary “to the designated higher education institution”, rather than to the applicant. It also allows NSFAS to enter into what is in effect an agency agreement with higher education institutions (HEIs) or further education and training (FET) colleges.

NSFAS applications for student funding for the 2023 academic year are opened from 1 September to 30 November 2023. It is always good to submit your application earlier than the deadline.
How do I apply for NSFAS 2023
- TO qualify for NSFAS funding you must be:
- A South African Citizen;
- SASSA grant recipients (the SASSA COVID-19 grant does not count); Persons whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per
year; Persons living With disabilities With a combined household income not more than R600 000 per annum_ - A permanent resident—An individual who is in possession of a valid Permanent Residency Permit issued by the Department Of Home Affairs in South Africa. Supporting document required:
- All applicants must provide a copy of their ID document. Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart 10 must be provided.
- A temporary ID issued by the Department 01 Home Affairs
- Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent’s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse:

How do I apply for NSFAS 2023-2024 Accadmic Year?

You will need to first visit nsfas.org.za and register for a myNSFAS account and submit your application online.
Once your myNSFAS account is set up and functional, follow these simple steps and submit your application:
Step 1: Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and complete the sections on the screen by providing the required information.
Step 2:Upload required supporting documents where applicable
Step 3:Click on ‘Submit’ required information.
Step 4: And just like that, you NSFAS funding application has been submitted.
Documents needed to verify your NSFAS funding application
Take note of the below important documents needed to complete the application:
1.All applicants must provide a copy of ID. A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted.
2.Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse.
3.Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided.
4.Proof of income: applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide latest payslip not older 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse).
5.Person with disabilities: to complete Disability Annexure A form.
Once your funding application becomes successful, NSFAS will cover your costs for:
- Accommodation
- Transport
- Living allowance
- Book allowance
- Incidental/personal care allowance
If you are studying at the University of South Africa (UNISA) you will receive funding for:
Tuition
Books (subject to the number of modules registered)
Personal care allowance
