How Much Is Nsfas Spending On Students In 2025/2026

After 2023, NSFAS is expected to not have enough money, about R1.1 billion less. It could go up to R5.5 billion less if they cut the budget by 10% in 2024.

In the year before, NSFAS planned to spend R41.9 billion in 2024/2025 to help university students, and R43.7 billion in 2025/2026. They also got R9.7 billion for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges in 2024, and R10 billion in 2025. This money was meant to help students from poor families get a tertiary education. To get this help, students’ families shouldn’t earn more than R350,000 each year.

But, because of money problems, the government decided to spend less in many areas, including R13.7 billion less for tertiary education. This made people worry that students might not get the NSFAS help anymore. Some even worried that NSFAS might change who gets help, so fewer students get it.
