The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, commonly known as NSFAS is a government bursary that is available to underprivileged South African students who are looking to study at a public university or TVET College in the country.  So if you’re looking for funding for your tertiary studies then you should consider applying for an NSFAS bursary as they provide funding for registration, tuition and allowances. These allowances cover transport, living expenses and learning materials. NSFAS has recently released a statement in which they have announced that they will soon be preparing for 2023 bursary applications.  “NSFAS intends to resolve any exceptions within the 2021 programme cycle as it will soon start to prepare for the 2023 application cycle,” the statement read.

When is NSFAS Opening for Applications?

NSFAS Application for 2023 will be opening on 1st September and close on 30th January 2023.
No Late Application.

The requirements for the NSFAS bursary are as follows:

  • Must be a South African citizen.
  • Can be a SASSA grant recipient.
  • Applicants combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum.
  • Persons with a disability’s combined household income is not more than R600 000 per annum.
  • Applicants who first registered at university before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

Can nsfas fund me if I failed

Yes, they will continue funding you. According to the NSFAS policy agreement, students must pass at least 50% of their modules as well as meet the academic requirements of their institution in order to continue receiving financial aid during the course of their study period.

However, this question also deals with the N+ rule NSFAS has in place. Before NSFAS was changed from a loan scheme to a bursary, the rule was ‘N+2’ and after the change which came into action in 2018, it was changed to the ‘N+1’ rule.

The N stands for the number of years your qualification goes for and the number (+1) refers to the number of years NSFAS will continue funding you for if you fail.
