Unisa disburses NSFAS allowances for returning students
National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) applications for student funding for the 2023 academic year are open from 1 September to 30 November 2022.
As an applicant, to hit the qualification level for government funding for university and TVET college studies, you must
- be a South African citizen.
- register at any of the 26 public universities or 50 TVET colleges.
- come from a family with an income of below R350 000 per annum (combined).
Kindly note that students with disabilities and also who are beneficiaries of social grants automatically qualify for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding. Adding, students wanting to study towards postgraduate qualifications do not qualify for NSFAS funding – you are encouraged to seek funding from the National Skill Fund and the National Research Foundation.
NSFAS has employed 200 NFAS unemployed graduates to support high learners throughout the country with the application process. These graduates will visit high schools and rural communities with no computer or internet access to assist students. Unisa Application Nsfas Grant

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has started disbursing allowances to National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funded returning students.
In a statement on Thursday, Unisa spokesperson Thomas Huma said the returning students will start receiving their allowance from 1 September to 30 November 2022., and the allowance will be disbursed in batches of 15 000 per day until 1 September to 30 November 2022.
“The NSFAS returning students who haven’t received their allowance by 1 September to 30 November 2022., are advised to contact the Division: Student Funding (DSF) on DSF-NSFAS@unisa.ac.za,” Huma said.
Huma said the allowances for new students will only be distributed once the NSFAS has finalized the approved list.
The university has apologized for the inconveniences caused by the delays.
Applications for admission to undergraduate qualifications (higher certificates, advanced certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas & degrees) for the 2023 academic year will be open from 11 August to 15 October 2023.
Everyone wanting to start a new qualification must apply for admission. This includes
- first-time Unisa applicants.
- Unisa students changing to a new qualification and/or specialization.
- applicants who previously applied for admission and were not offered a space or who were offered a space accepted the offer and did not register.
- students completing a higher certificate or any other programme and who wish to continue with further undergraduate studies.
