How the South African Financial Aid System Works in 2027/2028

Understanding how NSFAS works for the 2027/2028 academic year is important for students seeking financial assistance to study at public universities or TVET colleges in South Africa. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government-funded program that provides bursaries and loans to students from low-income households, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent access to higher education. For the 2027/2028 academic year, NSFAS will cover a range of study-related costs for eligible students.

This includes tuition fees, registration, learning materials, accommodation, transport, living allowances, and personal care allowances. Funding is available to South African citizens and permanent residents who meet the financial requirements, generally a combined household income of R350,000 or less per year, with a higher limit of R600,000 for students living with disabilities. The application process is fully online through the NSFAS website (www.nsfas.org.za), where students create a myNSFAS profile, submit personal and academic information, and upload required supporting documents.

Once the application is submitted, students can track the progress of their funding through the myNSFAS portal, receiving updates on whether their application is submitted, under review, approved, or requires additional documents. NSFAS funding is designed to relieve students of financial stress, allowing them to focus on their studies while covering essential costs. By following the official application guidelines and submitting complete and accurate information, students increase their chances of approval and can access support in time for the 2027/2028 academic year.
