Everything You Need to Know About NSFAS Applications for 2026/2027:
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has opened its 2026/2027 application window to receive applications from eligible applicants across the nation. NSFAS is a government entity under the Department of Higher Education and Training established according to the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999) to provide financial support to disadvantaged students who wish to further their studies at public universities or TVET colleges.
NSFAS provides funding to eligible students to cover various expenses, including tuition fees, accommodation, transportation, living allowances, book allowances, and incidental or personal care allowances. The application process for the 2026/2027 academic year is entirely online and can be accessed via the NSFAS website. The online application window for 2026 will open from September and it will close on the 15th of November 2025.

- Applicants are to take note of the application deadline and submit them within that period because applications that are submitted after the application deadline cannot be processed.

Who Qualifies For NSFAS Applications 2026/2027
- All South African citizens
- All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
- A person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
- Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum
Nsfas Applications Required Documents 2026/2027
When applying for NSFAS funding, the following supporting documents are typically required:
- Certified copy of South African ID, or birth certificate if not a South African citizen
- Certified copy of ID of parent, guardian, or spouse
- Proof of income (payslips, SASSA letter, affidavit if self-employed)
- Matric certificate or latest academic results
- Acceptance letter from a public university or TVET college
- Banking details in the name of the applicant
- Disability Annexure (if applicable)
- Consent form signed by parent, guardian, or spouse (if applicant is under 18)
- Death certificate/s (if applicable)

If you would like to apply for NSFAS 2026, follow the steps outlined below:
- You have to visit the NSFAS website: www.nsfas.org.za online
- Then, you have to click on the “myNSFAS” tab
- After that, you create your myNSFAS account
- After creating myNSFAS account, you then have to click on the “Apply” tab
- Answer the following questions you see on your screen
- Update all your personal information
- Upload all the required supporting documents
- Click on “Submit” to send your application for review
